Meet: at the Point Hut Crossing carpark, Saturday 9.00am
Planned activities: This month we'll be doing some planting as well as continuing to move rocks to build up leaky weirs towards the bottom end of Barney's Gully not far from where it flows into the Murrumbidgee. If you'd prefer to take photos or do bird or wildlife observations, we'd be happy to have you along too!
Please wear suitable clothes and sturdy footwear, a sense of humour, and bring water.
Last month: again, we moved rock to work on a leaky weir. This is in a secondary gully below a dam on the lower end of Barney's Gully, above the most eroded part of the gully. If we can control the water upstream by removing as much energy as possible, then we can begin to slow and turn around the erosive processes. It was an incredible workout. I had to stress to our new POSM member (welcome!) that that's the most physical work we've done. We were lucky to have a big group of keen volunteers and 4 wheelbarrows, and we made a huge inroad into building up the weir to withstand the occasional high flows when the dam overflows and the massive area of runoff is covered in sheets of water.
For more information about the POSM group, see the Parkcarers of Southern Murrumbidgee page.
Hope to see you all on Sat 9th August.
Future Activities are planned for the following dates in 2014:
