Molonglo River Rescue Action Plan Launch

The Molonglo River Rescue Action Plan will be offically launched in May 2010 (exact date TBA). The Action Plan details actions required to rehabilitate the Molonglo River from its headwaters in Tallaganda National Park, down to its confluence with the Murrumbidgee River north-west of Canberra. The Action Plan was created through a Caring for our Country Grant and aims to facilitate on-ground works to restore this iconic water course. 


Beware - Phyla canescens

Promoted as a lawn substitute by Sydney Water and Friends of the Earth, Phyla canescens has invaded more than 5 million hectares of the Murray-Darling Basin.

Phyla canescens This weed has been incorrectly labeled as Phyla nodosa throughout the country. As well as out choking pasture species in places like Mooree leading to significant financial losses, this invasive plant is devasting parts of the Macquarie Marshes.

The mat forming perennial comes from the Americas. It was introduced as a lawn substitute and as erosion control on irrigation banks. It reproduces by seed and vegetatively.

Groundwater in the Upper Murrumbidgee - Fact Sheet launched

Parliamentary Secretary for Water, Dr Mike Kelly MP recently launched a fact sheet dealing with groundwater and which has been prepared by the Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment Coordinating Committee.

This fact sheet discusses groundwater in a simplified way, emphasising the relationship between groundwater and surface water. Topics discussed include:

New Look for Landcare with National Facilitator Appointed

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke today welcomed Mr Brett de Hayr as the new National Landcare facilitator.

Mr Burke said the appointment of Mr de Hayr was an important step in the continued reinvigoration of Landcare in Australia.

The declaration arose from an informal meeting of groups and individuals concerned at the lengthening catalogue of bad news about collapsing ecosystems and recognising the impetus for action represented by the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity.
