About the woodland
The Hughes Garran Woodland is an eight hectare Woodland between the suburbs of Hughes and Garran with the Southern Cross retirement village to the west and Kitchener Street to the east.
Before European invasion, the site was Yellow Box–Red Gum Grassy Woodland, but a century of unsustainable grazing and the development of the suburbs have seriously degraded the site. Fortunately, much of the park was replanted in 1965, mostly to yellow box, apple box and Blakely’s red gum- trees that existed in the original woodland.
The aim is to develop the Woodland as an amenity park for the local community. It is not a Nature Park, but in the longer term, the aim is to restore the area to look like the original box-gum grassy woodland.
Adopt-A-Park Program
The Hughes Garran Woodland Group was a successful recipient of the ACT Government’s Adopt-A-Park program at the end of 2019. The group received funding to upgrade a pathway in the park to improve community access, to reduce erosion, to promote the park through signage and install a water source to enable watering recent plantings throughout the drought. These activities will take place throughout 2020 with the support of SACTCG.
Long Term Management Plan
The Hughes Garran Woodland Group was awarded an ACT Environment Grant to develop a Long Term Management Plan for the Woodland. The eight hectare Hughes Garran Woodland lies between the suburbs of Hughes and Garran with the Southern Cross retirement village to the west and Kitchener Street to the east. The aim is to develop the Woodland as an amenity park for the local community.
Consultants were engaged to assist in the preparation of the plan. The Woodland was mapped to show its vegetation and natural features as well as access roads and walking tracks. This information, along with input from fire and maintenance people in ACT Government, was used to divide the Woodland into five Units according to their different management requirements. The final Plan will provide both the Hughes Garran Woodland Group and the ACT Government with guidelines for its activities over the next ten years.
